The Collective is home to the aptly named Darwin’s Barbers, The Darwin Centre’s only barbers serving the people of Shrewsbury with men’s and children’s haircuts (and dry cuts for ladies). A short walk from Raven Meadows car park on the lower ground floor of the shopping centre, it’s conveniently situated for you to pop in a trim whilst you’re in town doing Christmas shopping and errands.

We chatted to the force behind the scissors – Allie, on what she loves about running Darwin’s…

How did you get into hairdressing/barbering?

I’ve always been obsessed with hair since I was a teenager and, having done various jobs, I decided that I wanted to train as a hairdresser. I’m now qualified to Level 3 and so pleased I pursued my dream.

Tell us what you enjoy most about your job

I meet lots of lovely people and help make them happy by making their hair look good.

What is your favourite style to cut?

I absolutely love doing short cuts, particularly for ladies who want something short but still feminine. I also enjoy helping people whose hair is thinning in places, by using cutting techniques to disguise it and make it look fuller.

What is the craziest request you’ve had?

This would be an undercut Mohawk for a lady in her 80s. The result looked fabulous and it really suited her!

What hair care tips would you recommend for the gentlemen of Shrewsbury?

  • Get your hair trimmed regularly
  • Ask your barber for advice on products suitable for your particular hair type

What do you enjoy most about being part of The Collective at Darwin?

The staff are all lovely, friendly and welcoming.  We all help support each other’s businesses.
